About the Area

There's lots to see and do in and around Bridport and West Bay; visit the Bridport Museum in the heart of the town and uncover the town's fascinating story. The Arts Centre has regular events and exhibitions. With miles of country paths, many of them waymarked, West Dorset is great for walking.

Bridport

Bridport is a vibrant and colourful town set amongst the West Dorset hills. Dating from the 9th or 10th century, it stands where the rivers Brit and Asker meet. In the early 13th century, Bridport had become the country's most important ropemaking centre. This was followed by netmaking and it was upon these two industries that the town's fame and fortune was built. A regular market has been held in Bridport for over 1,000 years. Market days are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays along with regular farmer's markets, with an Annual fair held in August as the town's carnival.

West Bay

One mile south of Bridport is West Bay, a busy harbour village with characteristic kiosks, fishing boats, pubs and restaurants all nestled between the spectacular East and West Cliffs. The recently built Juarssic Pier forms part of the revamped coastal defence scheme and provides spectacular views of the World Heritage Coast. Here you'll enjoy breathtaking views stretching from Portland Bill to Brixham.
